Enjoy Off-Road Moreton Island Tour: Wild-Life And Adventure In Queensland

Moreton Island is in south-east Queensland, just under 60 kilometres north-east from the state capital Brisbane. Most of the island is National Park territory, and the island is a popular tourist destination. Tourist activities include driving four wheel driving, camping, fishing and whale watching. Visitors to the state of Queensland can take a Moreton Island tour from Brisbane City.

Moreton Island is about 170 square kilometres in area. It is about 40 kilometres in length, and about 8 kilometres across at the widest point. The long, thin shape is typical of this type of sand island, which has been formed by sand deposits being dragged along by the currents along the Queensland coast.

The only rock outcrop on this island of sand is Cape Moreton at the north eastern tip of the island. The lighthouse there was built by convicts. Captain James Cook, the British explorer, sailed past here in 1770. Believing that the area was part of the Australia mainland he named the point Cape Morton (the spelling changed to Moreton later, apparently through a transcription error). In 1799 Matthew Flinders discovered that it was actually an island.

At 280m and 264m Mount Tempest and the nearby Storm Mountain are the largest coastal sandhills in the world. Only in Iran do coastal sandhills come close to these.

The island is known to have been home to aboriginal Australians since at least 2000 years ago. The first settlement by Europeans was in 1848. All four of the (small) settlements on Moreton island are on the sheltered Western side, nearest to the Queensland mainland. The largest of these is Tangalooma. At one point this was a whaling base, and up to eleven humpback whales were processed here every day. The whales were killed during their annual migration along the coast. This ended in 1962, and the site is now a wild dolphin reserve. The old whaling station is now a Marine Education and Conservation Centre, and the area is noted for dolphin feeding and wreck diving.

With vehicle and foot passenger ferry services to Lytton and Pinkenba near Brisbane, Tangalooma is the main access point to Moreton Island. Only four wheel drive vehicles may be brought to the island: there are no metalled roads. Some tour and taxi services are based in Tangalooma, and also at Bulwer in the north-west. Camping and off-roading is allowed in certain parts of the island. Permits should be obtained before arriving.

A number of tour operators cover the island, including Hooked on Moreton, Australia Day Tours, and Goanna Adventure Tours. Goanna have one to three day tours of Moreton Island, and also of Fraser Island. The one day tour departs from Brisbane, but can be joined at Tangalooma Wrecks if you are already on the island.

There a wide variety of sights and experiences even on a short, one-day Moreton Island Tour. Tourists may spot a humpbacked whale (in season only), but will also spot many other large marine animals: dolphins, turtles and dugong. A professionally qualified guide will lead the group snorkelling at Tangalooma Wrecks, and group members might try sand boarding or tobogganing on the massive sand hills. Transport is by off-road, four wheel drive vehicles, and the route passes through eucalyptus forests and desert areas, before reaching the Pacific at the Eastern Beach.

Leasowe Lighthouse is Britain’s oldest brick built lighthouse and is becoming a focal point of the Wirral coast due to its position between two major rivers; it is in proximity to maritime centre of Liverpool on one side and the natural attractions of the river Dee on the other.

In 1888 William Hesketh Lever had built factories and needed to house his workers so he built Port Sunlight Village. Even though the factories are gone the village is sill home to thousands of residents, Schools, churches and hotels.

Water from the Mersey Railway Tunnel was pumped from Shore Road Pumping Station; this is home to a selection of working examples of the giant steam pumps built in the 1870s to pump.
